Who is behind the name "DUO FANTASIA"? Julia Ito and her husband Utum Yang founded a concert duo for piano and flute. The two passionate musicians called themselves "Duo Fantasia" because they set themselves the goal of exploring the world of fantasy through music. How did the duo get to know each other? Julia Ito met her music partner, the flutist Utum Yang, in 2003 during her studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich, where she was regularly available to the flute classes as a piano accompanist. From the lessons developed a long-lasting cooperation. Several times Ito and Yang participated in university concerts and international competitions and thus developed a common repertoire. How did the duo come about? In 2009 both musicians joined the concert club "Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now" and regularly gained concert experience under their initial name "Duo 112". The numbers "112" were on the one hand that the two played not only common pieces, but also individual piano and flute solos in their performances. On the other hand, they had developed not only professionally, but also privately to a couple, which is why the label was also to be interpreted as "1 + 1 = 2" - ie. man + woman. Over the years, the now-married musicians collected ideas and suggestions to build a new concept and to find their own personal style as a concert duo. Since a large part of their repertoire consisted of classical fantasy pieces, they decided to design their program exclusively with such pieces and to rename themselves "Duo Fantasia". The idea behind this concept was that music itself is a kind of fantasy. With music you can describe fantastically fantastic scenes and immerse yourself in foreign worlds. Utum and Julia have thus found the right world for themselves, in which they can express and develop themselves. What are the goals of the duo? Many composers have called their works "Fantasy" and so Utum and Julia decided to collect as many of these pieces as possible and to combine them into a real fantasy collection. As "Duo Fantasia", they would like to regularly introduce new fantasy pieces from their repertoire in their concerts.
The duo has set itself the goal to arouse the imagination in all people, not only in adults, but also in children. Because all generations have fantasy. How does the duo realize it’s concept?
